Performance Task Topic: Solving Multi-step Equations

Enduring Understandings: what I want the students to understand at the end of this unit is the way the numbers, algebraic expressions, and procedures are interconnected and work together to solve all different types of problems. (i.e. opposite function when you cross the equal sign; order of operation)

Essential Question: How can we use algebraic algorithms to solve everyday problems and how does this make our work more efficient?

NCTM Standards:

2. Solve simple linear equations informally, graphically, and using formal algebraic methods:
· Multi-step, integer coefficients only
· Simple literal equations
· Using paper-and-pencil, calculators, graphing calculators, spreadsheets, and other technology
4. Create, evaluate, and simplify algebraic expressions involving variables; Order of Operations, including appropriate use of parenthesis; Distributive property; Substitution of a number for a variable; Translation of a verbal phrase or sentence in an algebraic expression, equation, or inequality, and vice versa.

Performance Task:
For an eighth grade graduation present your parents are planning a seven (7) day trip to Disney World and are going to rent a car and drive it from your home all the way to Orlando. They have set aside $400 for the rental car. Listed below you will find the rates for 4 different rental car companies. Using the list write and solve an equation for the distance you can travel with $400 for each company. Which if any has the best rate for your family? Can your family make it to Disney World on a $400 dollar budget with any of these companies, if so what are their choices (list all possible)? Which do you recommend? (You will have to research the distance from your house to Orlando to see which rental car company can meet the needs of your family.) Be creative with this assignment. Each student will submit either a poster or foldable/pamphlet that neatly shows all work done, all equations created and solved, the distance from their own house to Disney World, which car rental company they will use (maybe even a picture of the car they are renting), and lastly something they are excited about seeing or doing in Disney World.

The materials you need for this assignment are internet access or a map for finding the distance from your home to Orlando, the attached prices for vehicle rental, poster and colors. We as a class are scheduled for a laboratory day, which will provide everyone with the opportunity to find the distance from their home to Disney World.

Questions to consider as you work through this Task:

All equations are dependent on what?...The down payment, the distance, the cost per mile, the total amount of money spent?

If I increased the dollar amount would that change the car rental company you chose? Why or Why not?

If I changed the distance you were traveling would that effect your choice of car rental company? Why or Why Not?

Rubric:
  1. Student Accurately develops ands solves an equation involving a variable for all four of the rental companies. Student Correctly Identifies which car company should be used and gives a brief explanation, which conveys understanding. Students poster or pamphlet is neatly and creatively designed and contains all necessary requirements (equations, distance from home to Disney World, Chosen are Rental Company, and an activity they are excited about seeing at Disney World.)

  1. Equations are written but small error in calculating distances occurred. Correct
Car Company is identified, distance from home to Orlando is identified, and Student Poster is Complete (contains all necessary information.). Some neatness and creativity may be lacking.

2. Equations and solutions contain small error. Incorrect Car Company is
identified, distance from home to Orlando is identified. Poster/Pamphlet contains
all necessary requirements but lacks creativity and neatness.

1. Equations and Solutions contain major errors. Incorrect Car Company is
identified, distance from home to Orlando is missing or incorrectly identified, and
Student Poster/Pamphlet is disorganized and missing material/requirements.
